Here are some helpful hints and suggestions to help you keep your property looking great through the fall and winter months.
Just because summer is over doesn’t mean your flower beds need to be bare. Introduce some gorgeous color with hardy mums. These can be planted directly in street tree beds or in entrance containers to provide instant impact. Pansies are another popular flower choice for fall installations as they can survive cooler night temperatures. Because of their resiliency, they have the potential to provide color to your landscape throughout the winter.
Incorporating evergreens into your fall and winter landscape provides a shot of color and interest to your property during colder months. Available in a variety of shapes and sizes, these resilient plants can be planted well into the fall, if nighttime temps stay above freezing
The last half of summer can be brutal on foundation shrubs. Losing plants to extreme heat and/or monsoon-like rains has not been uncommon for our clients this year. If you have shrubs that didn’t fare well, now is the time to plan on replacing basics such as Taxus and Boxwood. Taking advantage of a more stable fall climate will help them get established before winter sets in.
Lastly, now is the time to handle year-end property maintenance. Make sure your landscape contractor is laying down a fresh layer of mulch to provide your beds with insulation and nutrition. Ensure that plants are fertilized to help stay healthy all winter long and that all trees and shrubs receive a proper pruning. This will guarantee them a fresh start when spring comes again.
